Approaches to Therapy

Sometimes life gets overwhelming and we don’t feel like anyone will quite understand what we are going through. Whether it is stress, worry, anxiety, sadness, depression, trauma, or maybe something more, seeking therapy can be the supportive space that helps us to get through. Sara approaches therapy as a collaborative process. She emphasizes personal growth and empowerment, through creating a compassionate and empathic space for her clients. Working together, Sara will support you in (re)connecting to your inner joy and wisdom, self-confidence, and ability to heal yourself, mind and body. Sara believes everyone has the tools and sometimes we just need the reminder of how to use them.

Brief Bio

Sara is an Associate Professional Clinical Counselor and Board Certified Dance/Movement Therapist with over 8-years experience in mental health services. Specializing in the mind-body connection, Sara has enjoyed working with individuals and groups on building self-awareness and communication skills, both verbally and non-verbally.

Sara completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance Studies at Arizona State University, with capstone research on the psychology of self-esteem and body image in adolescent girls. She received an Associates of Business from Mesa Community College (and even obtained her real estate license in Arizona). Ultimately, it was her understanding of the psychological healing power of movement that led Sara to pursue a Master of Arts in Dance/Movement Therapy and Clinical Counseling, as well as a Graduate Certificate in Movement Analysis, at Columbia College Chicago. Following completion of thesis research on non-verbal communication, movement patterns, and personality, Sara made her move to Los Angeles in 2011.

In addition to graduate studies, Sara has completed advanced trainings in Trauma Focused – Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Trauma Informed Care, sexual assault and crisis management, LGBTQ+ advocacy and support services, and substance counseling. Her passion for holistic health has also guided her to obtain a 200 Hour Yoga Teaching credential and additional studies in holistic health and nutrition. Sara integrates her diverse knowledge and skillset within private practice and workshops she facilitates on stress management, burnout prevention, and wellness.

Prior to joining PsychServes, Sara has worked in settings ranging from acute psychiatric hospitalization to long-term residential mental health treatment facilities. Sara gained experience working throughout Los Angeles and the Bay Area, within community and school based counseling, foster youth programs, low-income clinics, and private psychiatric and substance treatment facilities. Sara specializes in working with teens through young adults, but has experience ranging from elementary children to aging adults.

Sara is currently the New Media Manager for the American Dance Therapy Association (ADTA) – Public Relations Committee, and previously served as the Public Relations Chairperson on their National Board of Directors.
